Hello, my name is Matt Hart, and this is my story about the time I broke my leg. Most people would think that breaking a leg would be a horrible experience, but mine was life changing.
The day started out normal, and I was on my way to hockey practice. I got to the rink, and I saw all of my teammates and got dressed in the locker room. When we were all finished getting dressed we went on the ice. This was my sophomore year in high school, so it was my first time playing on the high school team. We had a fairly easy practice, and on the last drill, the ice fell silent. I didn’t know what exactly had happened, but I looked down, and my leg was twisted. The coaches skated over to me, and they called my parents. The next thing I remember was that I was at the hospital.
When I got to the hospital, the doctor didn’t want to do any surgery to allow me to play the next year. I was put in a hip-to-toe cast, and couldn’t move my leg for a month and a half. I had to learn to rely on my parents for most things that I thought were easy before the injury.

After my injury, I was in the hospital for a couple of days, and finally I was allowed to go home. I was at home, and my parents had helped do everything. It was about two weeks before I could start going back to school and getting back into a routine.
The moment I realized that I couldn’t play hockey for the rest of the year killed me. I was on a downward spiral, and my parents were worried about me. Hockey for me, is more than just a game, it’s a way of life. I have played hockey since 1st grade, and this was the first winter that I couldn’t.
i played hockey for 10 years and i had to stop when i moved it does really suck.
ReplyDeleteWow, Matt -- that injury impacted your life immensely . . . and for quite some time, too! I loved the fact that you were able to write about your love + passion for the sport of hockey. Telling your story is certainly part of the healing process, I am sure. I can relate, but not to this extent, as I've had some runner injuries [knee + hip alignment issues] since running my marathon this past summer! Take care, Matt!
